Midnight Purple

This piece is an exquisite oval box created from 92 pieces of South American Purpleheart wood with a high gloss finish of hand rubbed lacquer. The top of the lid consists of 36 wedges of solid Purpleheart resulting in a starburst grain pattern radiating out from the sterling silver inlay which is easily removed for engraving.

I made the lid handle, a miniature of the overall piece, from sterling silver.

The skirt of the lid and the body of the box are coopered; each having 28 unique staves of solid Purpleheart to create the flowing elliptical form that is the soul of this piece. The coupling of the starburst top and the coopering causes a breathtaking waterfall of rich deep purple wood grain out from the top center, over the edges and down the sides of the piece. This beautiful work uses no stain, dye, or any other artificial coloration. This is the natural color of the Purpleheart brought out by a proprietary process I developed.

The inside of the top, the floor of the lift-out tray and the inside bottom of the box are lined with soft purple velveteen fabric.  The lift-out tray has a Purpleheart handle across its center surrounded by a band of 5 layers of Hard Maple with the outside layers of beautifully figured Birds Eye Maple and accented with Purpleheart rub rails.

When placed upon a firm surface the box appears to float 5mm (3/16 inch) above the surface due to concealed button feet.

A view of the back of the box reveals the attention to detail in the creation of this piece. The solid brass hinges and screws have been silver plated to continue the purple and silver theme of the piece.
