Midnight Purple Graduation Gift

This box was designed expressly for a young lady graduating from college who loved the Midnight Purple box I had made a few years before.

She is very artistic and enjoys calligraphy so I took a calligraphy set and replaced the original plastic pen handles with ones I turned out of solid Ebony wood and made this glass lidded box in Purpleheart.

I silver plated the solid brass knob and hinges to continue the "purple and silver" theme I used in Midnight Purple.  I designed her monogram using "Ancestry SF" font and sand blasted it into the underneath side of the glass.  When this young lady was a small girl she used to do her art work on a glass-top coffee table.  Due to breakage, that original top had been replaced and I was able to get the original glass from which I cut this lid.  That gives the box additional sentimental value and she is reminded of this by the patina of small scratches in the glass.  Whenever possible I like to work with the client to add such personal details to their project.

One can see from this view the nibs are placed at a convenient angle and the use of stop hinges to support the lid.  However, what is not visible is the substantial amount of lead under the handle tray to add mass to the box so it didn't tip over backwards when the heavy glass lid was opened.
The rear view shows off the silver plated hinges.  Not shown are the small button feet which cause the box to appear to float 3/16" above the surface it is upon.
