Tall Grass

This symbolizes an African hut with grass growing up all around it.  African Ribbon Mahogany surrounds panes of stained glass with blades of grass (sand blasted into the glass) sweeping up from each lower pane into each upper pane.  The lid handle is the head of a charging bull elephant carved from solid black Ebony with silver plated tusks and eyes of solid 14K gold.  Each foot of the piece has a toenail of inlaid Ebony.
When one opens the work a view of the Savannah in miniature is seen with a small hut (of solid Ebony with pure silver inlaid around it's top) in the center of a green field of velveteen fabric surrounded by a wall with inlaid pure silver posts at each of the eight corners.

The small hut is the handle of the lift out tray which is made of Lacewood with Ebony splines through each outside corner.  Removing the tray reveals the floor of the box is also lined with the same dark green velveteen.  There are 74 small brass screws visible inside the piece (unfortunately not visible in this small photograph) that are silver plated and appear as jewels adorning the work.
Because this piece is expected to be table top displayed all sides of the work are finished with equal care such as silver plating all of the brass hardware including the hinges and screws.  With 207 pieces of wood and 17 pieces of glass, this is a substantial work.
