Traveler

This piece is a collaboration with Jane Burke (see my links page) who is an outstanding marquetry artist and with whom I have the pleasure of working with often.  This box was a wedding gift from the bride to the groom.  The couple are world travelers and she wanted a box which reflected this theme.  Jane designed and made the compass rose / world globe marquetry and I designed and made the box to be reminiscent of the old steamer trunks with rope handles.
In this view you can see Jane's marquetry artistry better.  Also the shape of the "rope" handle I carved from Madagascar Rosewood.  It comes out of the lid and sweeps up and away from the lid before sweeping back down and into the lid.

In addition to making the splines (a.k.a. keys) in the corners from the same Rosewood I also made custom hand made hinges of the same wood to tie the project theme together.
The bride requested that we have the bottom laser engraved. (see the laser engraving page on my web site)

The major wood is American Wild Cherry and the inside of the box had already been clear finished when the client decided she wanted the box stained a darker red.  The inside of the lid is veneered with Pommel Sapele. The outside of the box is stained with Blood Red dye which brought out the beautiful grain of the Cherry.  The final finish is hand rubbed lacquer with paste wax.
