Traveler's Mate

|
A few
years ago, working with a very talented lady and dear friend,
Jane Burke we created a wedding gift for the
bride to give to her groom and we named it Traveler.
The, now, husband asked for us to make a birthday gift for the, now, wife.
Hence the title "Traveler's Mate". This box is formed from one
large Mahogany timber that has been seasoning for several decades. |
| The marquetry scene
Jane created comes from a photograph the husband took from their cabin
looking out upon the lake showing the tree line on the far side reflected on
the water's surface and a totem pole and tall grass on the near side.
With "Traveler" I introduced hand
carved "rope" handles. So, of course, this box had to have similar handles.
These are made of Maple to contrast well with the Mahogany. I enjoy making them but the process is quite time consuming. |

On the
bottom I inlaid a Bloodwood heart with a hand-cut inlaid inscription chosen
by the husband. I made custom leather feet and set them into shallow sockets
to hold them in place. In keeping with the wife's taste for "retro" styles I carved all of the
outside of the box to create smooth curved sides and hand laid up a 9-ply
custom curved lid.
The lower of these photos shows the
dividers in the top tray and top drawer. The lower drawers don't have
dividers to allow storage of larger jewelry pieces and necklaces. |
| For the inside of the
lid I choose this beautiful Redwood burl. |

Although one would not
normally have all of the drawers open at once this does illustrate the graduated drawer heights
(shallowest at top to deepest at bottom). Size:
Approx. 34.29cm (13 1/2 inches) wide
Approx. 29.21cm (11 1/2 inches) deep
Approx. 22cm (8 3/4 inches) high |
