Zebra Embrace

I named this piece "Zebra Embrace" because it's made principally of Zebra wood and its coopered hyperbolic doors wrap around the core of the box like one embraces one's lover.  The other primary wood, Lapacho, was chosen because it matches the dark grain in the Zebra wood.  Everywhere you see solid brown wood it is Lapacho.   Although it doesn't show well in these pictures there is a Lapacho cap strip with 14K gold inlay running down the center between the doors.  It is actually fastened to the right door and is carried out of the way when the right door is opened.
When one opens the lid to gain access to the top tray one is struck by the bold grain fan pattern created by the 18 wedges forming the lid.

Opening the doors which gives access to the 4 drawers also reveals the necklace pegs and trays in the doors.  Of course the pegs are turned out of Lapacho and the trays are made of the same wood.  The front of the drawers are curved to match the shape of the doors.  When the drawers are all closed the Lapacho drawer pulls with their 14K gold inlays create the same vision as seen on the outside of the box when the doors are closed.  The top tray and all of the drawers are lined with chocolate brown crushed velour fabric.

This piece appeared in the October, 2001 issue of Fine Woodworking magazine and was in "Spotlight 2002" the American Craft Council's Southeast Regional Exhibition at the Longwood Center for Visual Arts at Longwood College in Farmville, VA.  The exhibition ran from May 25th through August 2nd, 2002.
